Shamini Abeykoon, MS

Therapist

I firmly believe in creating a setting for my clients where they are shown unconditional love and respect and have their resiliency acknowledged as a therapist. I employ a person-centered therapeutic approach. I think it's crucial to develop enduring bonds of trust with my clients because I firmly believe in the transformative power of human connection. Despite the pain and suffering, I have the utmost respect and admiration for my clients because they are navigating the human experience. My approach to treatment is adapted to meet the individual needs of each client and draws on a variety of approaches that have been proven to be evidence-based. I'm dedicated to determining the most efficient approach for each client, whether it's narrative exposure therapy, trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, or experiential therapy.

  • I completed a Bachelor in Psychology, with a Minor in Sociology at Minnesota State University, Mankato, and Completed a Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at St Cloud State University.

My particular areas of interest are cross-cultural phenomena, trauma resiliency, and further developing non-intrusive approaches to helping clients who have experienced complex trauma.

I have been trained in Narrative Exposure Therapy.

  • During my free time, I enjoy creative writing, poetry, and reading fiction. I also like strength training and enjoy going on walks, enjoying nature, and always on the lookout for a new hobby.
